Cyber Essentials comes up a lot in conversations with business owners, usually followed by "is that actually worth doing, or is it just a certificate for the wall?" It's a fair question, so here's an honest answer.
What it actually is
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed scheme that checks your business has five basic technical controls in place - things like firewalls, secure configuration, access control, malware protection and patch management. It's not exotic. It's the digital equivalent of locking your doors and windows.
Why it matters
Most cyber attacks aren't sophisticated, targeted operations. They're automated and opportunistic, looking for the easiest way in. Cyber Essentials is specifically designed to close off that easy route. Getting certified doesn't make you unhackable, but it does take you out of the "easy target" category.
Who tends to need it
Some businesses need Cyber Essentials because a client or supply chain contract requires it - this is increasingly common in the public sector and larger corporate supply chains. Others go for it because it's a sensible baseline and a useful way to demonstrate to clients that security is taken seriously.
What certification involves
At its simplest, it's a self-assessment questionnaire reviewed by an accredited certification body. For most small businesses with a reasonably tidy IT setup, the process takes a few weeks from start to finish - most of that being the tidying up, not the paperwork.
Our honest verdict
For most established small businesses, yes - it's worth it. The controls it requires are ones you probably should have anyway, the certification gives clients and prospects a quick, credible signal that you take security seriously, and the cost is modest compared to the alternative.
That said, it isn't mandatory for everyone, and we won't tell you it's essential if it genuinely isn't right for your business yet.
